Christmas Fayre 2025

The Newmilns Christmas Fayre will be held in Morton Hall on Saturday, 29th November, between 4 and 6 pm.

The Christmas Light Switch-on will take place at 6 pm at Kirkgate Gardens, with Newmilns & Galston Brass Band playing in the lead-up to the big switch-on.

Santa will also be visiting the Church Hall between 4 -6 pm, pre-booking at:

Newmilns Regeneration Association are delighted to release £2,500 from the 8th round of funding from Newmilns Lottery Community Fund.

Applications are now invited from Newmilns groups to apply for part or all of this fund. Funds must be used for projects or improvements that benefit people living in Newmilns and Greenholm.

Application forms are available by emailing lotto@lovenewmilns.org . The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday, 26th October 2025 .

The successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday, 29th October 2025.

This would not have been possible without the people who participate in the Newmilns Lottery every month. Half of the money raised goes directly to the Community Fund, and the other half goes to prize money.

Painted Pride in Newmilns

Painted by local artists, two new murals honour the town’s renowned lace legacy. These stunning pieces convert ordinary gable ends into vibrant open-air galleries, encouraging you to stop, admire, and take pride in our heritage.

^ The Lace Darner - The Loudoun Arms, gable wall on Castle Street. A lifelike tribute to the skilled hand-darners who inspected and repaired lace, based on a photograph by Bob Astill of long-serving MYB Textiles employee Janey Gray.

^ Lace and Town Crest - 133 Main Street (beside Lady Flora’s). A dramatic draped lace concept inspired by a 1936 MYB Textiles pattern 'Lydia' and finished with the Newmilns crest and motto “Weave Truth with Trust"

Both murals were completed in August 2025 and are being added to the Love Newmilns Heritage App, allowing visitors to explore them as part of the town’s trails. Download the Heritage App here

The artists, Frank and Mandy Carty, of Artisan Artworks, are award-winning muralists with a studio on King Street in Newmilns. Their portfolio spans major brands to health and community projects across Scotland, and they have previously worked on murals as part of the Glasgow Mural Trail. We’re thrilled that our town’s heritage is being told by artists from our own community.

Special thanks to the Newmilns Heritage Group for all their planning, The National Lottery Heritage Fund , Frank and Mandy Carty at Artisan Artworks, MYB Textiles, Bob Astill for initial photography of the scenes, Tivoli for landscaping work, and Johnnie Alexander for the drone footage throughout the painting process.

Community Consultation - Art Murals

The Process

Newmilns Regeneration Association have been working behind the scenes with local artists Frank and Mandy Carty of Artisan Artworks to come up with a proposal for murals which depict the history of Newmilns.

We have drawn up a Community Consultation in order to get the views of the residents of Newmilns and would really appreciate your input to our Survey, link at the bottom of the page.

This consultation will also be displayed on the Community Notice Boards.

We will also be displaying the proposals at the Newmilns Christmas Fayre on Saturday 30th November in the Morton Hall (paper copies of the surveys will also be available here to complete).

Artisan Artworks also plan to visit Newmilns Primary School to present and explain the proposals to the children.

The survey will run from Sunday 24th November until Sunday 22nd December 2024.

The Benefits

The aim is to boost footfall to the town, which will, in turn, support the local economy. Across Scotland, mural trails attract tourists from around the globe, and we plan to integrate the Newmilns murals into these broader trails. Frank and Mandy Carty are involved in the Glasgow Mural Trail, a portfolio of 31 murals in the city centre and you can read more about it here Glasgow Mural Trail

Additionally, the murals will feature in our Heritage App, currently under development by our Heritage Group, to further enhance their accessibility and appeal.

By encouraging visitors to slow down and appreciate their surroundings, we hope they’ll take time to enjoy the art and its connection to the local area and it's rich history in lace weaving.

Since the murals are outdoors, they provide an inclusive experience for everyone to enjoy whenever it suits them. We also want to spark thought-provoking conversations through the stories and themes portrayed in the artwork.

The Locations

It is proposed to site each of the murals on two gable end walls - one facing east and the other facing west. Two potential sites have been identified for the murals, and discussions have already taken place with the owners of both properties, who have indicated their willingness to take part in the project.

Site 1

Property adjacent to Lady Flora's at 133 Main Street - currently a private residence and prior to this was the factory of W.W. Wales Ltd, Butcher.

Site 2

The Loudoun Arms, gable wall at Castle Street. This is a Category B-listed building, built during the 18th century with links to the Covenanters and Rabbie Burns.

The Artist

Frank Carty of Artisan Artworks is recognised as one of Scotland's top mural artists, and we are proud to have him as part of our Newmilns community. His wife, Mandy, is an equal partner in the business and collaborates with Frank on their stunning artwork. Their impressive client list includes Heineken, Diageo, the BBC and NHS, as well as a diverse array of private clients.

Frank learned his craft from his father and travelled across Europe working as a street artist on sites like Champs Elysee in Paris and La Rambla in Barcelona. Eventually settling in Newmilns, Frank and Mandy's art studio is at King Street, Newmilns where they often host workshops for different groups. The Murals

It is proposed to create two separate murals - the proposed designs reflect some of the rich heritage of Newmilns which has its history steeped in weaving and the lace industry. Hand loom weaving was brought to the Irvine Valley by Flemish refugees at the end of the 16th Century. Around two centuries later the Newmilns lace industry rose to national prominence, as Britain began importing cotton from the United States. The madras lace industry became the largest employer in the area and Newmilns enjoyed a period of growth until the 1970s and today there is still a world wide demand for lace with MYB Textiles and Haddow Aird and Crerar the last two remaining factories in Newmilns.

Concept 1

Lace (Lady Flora's/Main Street Building)

The design shown in the image below, a black and white artist impression created by Frank, is based on an MYB Textiles lace design titled 'Lydia', which dates back to 1936. The concept is to achieve a 3D-style mural with the lace draped over the side of the building. It is proposed that the town crest (Weave Truth with Trust) and town motto are painted to look like carved stone with gilded lettering (gold leaf), with a paragraph to be created below the town crest in the same letter style as the William Morton Memorial, situated at Gowanbank. The mural would be painted in full colour, with a life span expectancy of 10-15 years.

Concept 2

Hand Darner Sitting on Stool (Loudoun Arms)

Taken from a recent photograph at MYB Textiles, depicting a hand darner carrying out inspection and repair of the lace panels, whilst sitting on a low wooden stool. This process is still carried out today, on the same type of low wooden stool used for over 120 years. The design concept presented below is based on a photograph of long-standing MYB Textiles employee Janey Gray, who is set to retire next year after 26 years of dedicated service to the company.

Application for Disposal of Common Good Property

PURPOSE OF

The purpose of this consultation is to ascertain public views on the proposal submitted by Newmilns Regeneration Association purchase the Newmilns Townhouse through Community Asset Transfer Process.

BACKGROUND

COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT ACT PART 8

2. The application for disposal of this property has to meet criteria set out in Part 8 of the Community Empowerment Act as the Newmilns Townhouse falls onto the Common Good register. Common Good is a type of property that local authorities may have, which has been passed down by former burgh councils. It often has strong historical and emotional value to local communities, as well as its practical use and financial value. The Act places a statutory duty on local authorities to publish their proposals and consult community bodies before disposing of or changing the use of common good assets.

NEWMILNS TOWNHOUSE

3. The Newmilns Townhouse is located at 48-50 Main Street, Newmilns. The Townhouses core structure is indicated as being erected in around 1547 given the inscription on the town bell. Originally the building serves as a Tolbooth with the upper floor housing Council Chambers.

NEWMILNS REGENERATION ASSOCIATION

4. Constituted in 2014, Newmilns Regeneration Association (NRA) is an East Ayrshire based charity. The NRA works with residents, businesses, and groups of Newmilns and Greenholm, to work towards the second Newmilns and Greenholm Community Action Plan.

The organisation's main purposes are:

To promote the prevention or relief of poverty for the benefit of Newmilns and Greenholm
Promote and work towards the advancement of citizenship or community development for the benefit of Newmilns and Greenholm
To advance arts, heritage and culture
Promote the provision of recreational facilities and organise recreational activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the persons for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended.

The charity have, to date, completed a wide range of projects aimed at benefitting the community of Newmilns including; establishing the Newmilns Lottery; refurbishing the former Post Office building; establishing the Newmilns Food Festival. PROJECT

6. The organisation seek to purchase the Townhouse to undertake works to refurbish the exterior and interior to a usable state. The proposed project will ensure techniques and materials are used which will be sympathetic to the Townhouse’s current historical aesthetic. Due to the amount of applications, we made the decision to increase the amount released to £2,170, our biggest release of funds to date.

Gala Day Support Message

Newmilns Regeneration Association were delighted to support the Newmilns Gala Day on Saturday 25th May, with a float decorated to promote the Newmilns Lotto, which helps to support all the other groups in Newmilns. The volunteers from all groups give up their own time, creating happiness, achievement, connections and community bonds.

We have employed a development officer whose duties include sourcing and applying for grants for various projects. Some of the current projects are:

The Townhouse - sourcing funding to bring the iconic Townhouse back to its former glory.

Community Garden at Nelson Street/Brown Street that all the community can enjoy. After extensive consultation, a new garden sub-group has been created to take the project forward.

The Tin Shed at Browns Road - after extensive consultation and submission of planning permission, we plan to rebuild and provide an income for other projects.

A new master plan is being prepared to allow large amounts of funding to be sourced for extensive work to be carried out.

Heritage Group set up last year a new App, and lace murals proposed for the town.

Asset Transfer - Survey

Newmilns Regeneration Association have expressed an interest to East Ayrshire Council to asset transfer an area of derelict land on Nelson Street, backing on to Brown Street (the former Social Security Office). The asset transfer would be dependent on a robust business plan, a successful application for grant funding and support from the local community.

The desire for a community garden was established at a previous community consultation (the land where the former block of flats stood at the bottom of Borebrae), but the area was deemed unsuitable for a community garden for various reasons.

Newmilns Regeneration Association have been looking for a suitable site since this date and want to establish if a Community Garden would still be of interest to the community. We have now formed a small group of volunteers to take this project forward, but as usual, we would need more volunteers to join the group to ensure the success of the project going forward.

The proposal would be for a series of raised beds to make the garden accessible to all, with a storage facility sited on the land for storage of tools and equipment and other assets held by community groups.

We would like you to take our survey so we can put forward your ideas and if you would be interested in volunteering to help.

History of the Site at Nelson Street

The Nelson Street site was formerly local authority flats, demolished several years ago (Planning Application Ref 163/0909/DN) and the old Hood Morton & Co Ltd factory.

History of the Site at 52-54 Brown Street

This site was previously the old social security office, which was burned down, then demolished. A metal fence has now been erected at Brown Street.

The Newmilns Christmas Fayre will be held in the Morton Hall on Saturday 2nd December between 4-6pm, with the Christmas Light Switch at 6pm at the Kirkgate Gardens.

Refreshments will be available in the Church Hall and we will be announcing shortly how to book your visit to Santa's Grotto.

There will be many local groups, businesses and crafters, so please come along to support local businesses!

Tin Shed - Planning Application

Status Update - Tin Shed

Following on from the Community Consultation on the Tin Shed, we were successful in having a Feasibility Study funded through Community Enterprise Accellerate Program. The results of the Feasibility Study have still to be concluded and are expected in the next few weeks.

Pending results of the Feasibility Study for use of the building, Newmilns Regeneration Association are going to proceed with a planning application to East Ayrshire Council for the erection of a new building, based on the outcome of the surveys from the Community Consultation (summary of results below).

There will be an opportunity for interested parties to make comment against the planning application at this stage.

Below is a summary of the Surveys

Q1. Which of the external options do you like best?

The top option voted for was the Black/Red option with 48% (see image Option A below), with the All Black option coming second at 25% and the Red option with Black trim at 22%.

Q2. Which aspects of the proposal do you like?

The favourite aspect was the Proposed use of space (mixed use, café, arts & crafts) at 22%, with responses concerning Improvement to the Environment following a close second at 20% of the votes.

Q3. Do you have any particular areas of concern about the proposal?

The main vote at 56% was No Concerns, followed by 8% indicating their concern that a cafe might affect already established businesses in Newmilns.

Q4. Is there anything you would like to change, remove or add?

66% of you voted Nothing - no changes. Second top at 8% were comments regarding car parking or electric vehicle charging, but this is a separate issue pertaining to the adjacent car park and not directly to the Tin Shed project.

Q5. Community Cafe is one idea - do you have any alternative proposed uses?

The top voted alternative was Nothing (no alternative) at 34%, followed by 28% of voters selecting a community space for local businesses (community cafe/gallery etc), then 18% proposing a community events hub or multi-use space.

Q6. Do you have any questions or comments about the proposal?

79% of surveys had Nothing/No comment. The next issues mentioned were Timescales (3%), Car Park or electric charging (3%) or something to involve young people (3%).

A Community Consultation does not form part of a Planning Application and was to obtain the views of the local community.

The next stage will be the feasibility study to see if an asset transfer of the building would be successful.

NRA will also look to submit a Planning Application. There will be an opportunity at that stage to make any formal representations to East Ayrshire Council.

Community Consultation - Tin Shed

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Community Consultation on Saturday 19th November 2022 in our CHaT Hub, completed the feedback forms at our AGM in November or the Christmas Fayre in December. A total of 115 surveys were complete.

Over the last few months we have been busy meeting with professionals who have worked on similar projects (funding or experience running community buildings).

We are now planning to carry out a feasibility study for the project.

As we are a charity, we need to ensure that the proposals and asset transfer can be funded successfully, both for the build cost and the ongoing running costs.
