Remembrance Sunday - 8th November 2026
As Remembrance Sunday approaches, we take time to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who served our country, and particularly those from Newmilns and Greenholm who never returned home.
Standing proudly on Main Street, in front of Lady Flora’s Institute, the Newmilns War Memorial has been a place of remembrance for more than a century.
Unveiled in September 1922 by the Rt. Hon. Alexander Shaw, the memorial was funded by public subscription, with local residents coming together to create a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives during the First World War. Featuring a Highland soldier sculpted by Glasgow artists Scott & Rae, it provided grieving families with a dedicated place to remember their loved ones.
The memorial commemorates 138 local men who lost their lives during the First World War (1914–1918), with a further 40 names added following the Second World War (1939–1945).

Remembrance Sunday – 8 November 2026
This year's Remembrance parade and service, organised by Newmilns and Greenholm Community Council, will take place on Sunday 8 November.
The arrangements are as follows:
10.10am – Assemble at the Old Men's Cabin, Browns Road
10.25am – Parade marches off
10.35am – Remembrance service, including the laying of poppy wreaths and the two-minute silence
Everyone is welcome to come along and join the community in paying their respects.
A Lasting Tribute
The words inscribed on the memorial remain as meaningful today as they were over 100 years ago:
“Erected by the people of Newmilns and Greenholm in proud and everlasting memory of the men of this district who made the supreme sacrifice.... May they sleep in honour unbetrayed, and we in faith and honour keep that peace for which they paid.”
These words serve as a reminder not only of the lives lost, but of the responsibility we share to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.
